I Served. Then I Got Out. Then Nobody Told Me What Came Next.
I spent 8 years in the Air Force. When I transitioned out, I was proud, motivated, and completely unprepared for what it actually takes to stand up a veteran-owned business.
Nobody handed me a roadmap. The VA has information — buried. The SBA has resources — scattered. Every government site sends you to three more government sites, none of which actually answer the question you started with.
I’m not alone in that. Nearly half of all veteran entrepreneurs say navigating business resources is difficult. And that number probably understates it.
I’m Going Through This Right Now — Same As You
Here’s the thing I want you to know up front: I’m not writing to you from the other side of the mountain.
I’ve been deep in research on the VetCert process — the same SDVOSB certification process you’re probably trying to figure out — and I can tell you from experience: it’s incredibly hard to understand. The documentation is scattered, the steps aren’t clearly marked, and half the resources online reference old processes.
I started exploring the idea for MiraDesignCraftWorks back in 2008 when I got out of the military. But it’s only now, with the clarity and business tools available today, that I’m actually building it and moving through the certification process. So I’m navigating the exact same maze of federal portals, confusing documentation, and “where do I even start” frustration that brought you here.
That’s why I built this site.
I got tired of searching for a plain-language, practical resource that actually walked you through the process. Everything online was either written by bureaucrats, recycled by SEO content farms, or so far out of date it referenced processes that no longer exist.
So I decided to build what I was looking for.
What VetToOwner.com Is
This site is a resource hub for veterans who are serious about building a legitimate business — and potentially using their hard-earned SDVOSB status to compete for federal contracts.
That means:
- Plain-language guides on business formation, VetCert certification, and SAM.gov registration
- Practical checklists and templates you can actually use — not just read
- Honest reviews and recommendations for the tools I’m using myself (accounting software, banking, legal formation services)
- Real talk about federal contracting — what the set-asides mean, how the bidding process works, and why 90% of veteran businesses never compete for the $31B+ in contracts reserved specifically for them
I’m not a consultant. I’m not selling coaching. I’m a veteran who figured some of this out, is still figuring out the rest, and decided to document the process so the next person has an easier time than I did.
A Note on How I Make Money
This site uses affiliate links — meaning if you click a link and buy a product or service I recommend, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
I only recommend tools I’ve researched carefully and would (or do) use myself. The full affiliate disclosure is [here] (link to affiliate disclosure page once live).
I also offer downloadable guides and templates. Same standard applies — I only put something on this site if I think it’s genuinely useful.
The Mission Is Simple
You served. You earned your benefits and your designations. Now it’s time to use them.
Whether you’re still figuring out if an SDVOSB certification is right for you, working through the VetCert application, or trying to understand how federal contracting actually works — you’re in the right place.
Let’s figure it out together.
